[S59] Deuterium for Drug Discovery: From Fundamentals to Applications

Tue. Mar 28, 2023 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM [Room E1] Institute for the Advancement of Higher Education: E301 (Bldg. E: 3F)

Organizer: Hiroshi Naka, Yoshinari Sawama

The emergence of deuterated drugs (heavy drugs) has revolutionized the development of pharmaceuticals. While the research and development of deuterated pharmaceuticals have been accelerated in industry, many fundamental questions are left unanswered regarding the impacts, functions, and methodologies of deuteration. In 2020, we started the MEXT Transformative Research Areas (B) “Deuterium Science” to integrate research on deuterated drugs and organic materials. The project encompasses the synthesis, theory, measurement, and metabolism of deuterated molecules. This symposium aims to share with you the latest knowledge on deuterium science through talks on cutting-edge topics by researchers in pharmaceutical sciences and related fields. The status quo of the development of heavy drugs, efficient methods for synthesizing deuterated materials, and the fundamental aspects involved in analysis and isotope effects will be presented. We would like to discuss deuteration-assisted drug development from the basics to practical applications.
