[S55] The function of cell polarity in cell fate determination and disease

Tue. Mar 28, 2023 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM [Room HS1] (1F)

Organizer: Chieko Koike, Kazunori Akimoto

It has been more than 20 years since it was first proposed that cell shape regulates function. During this period, it has become clear that cell shape also plays critical roles in determining cell fate during development. In the symposium, we will first introduce the regulatory mechanisms of cell shape and cell fate determination in tissue formation under normal conditions. Specifically, we will introduce mechanisms for the control of cell polarity in epithelia and the relationship between polarity control and cell fate determination in neurogenesis. Then, as the second topic, we will introduce the relationship between cell shape abnormalities and diseases. In this topic, we will discuss autophagy and its regulation by cell polarity molecules during the asymmetric cell division of cancer stem cells leading to cancer cell heterogeneity. Next, we will address the topic of extracellular vesicles, which are considered to be a third type of intercellular communication system, and the relationship between extracellular vesicles and the cancer microenvironment. Thus, based on new evidence, we will discuss the relationship between cell polarity and its function, how cell shape abnormalities lead to pathology, and how cell shape determines tissue formation.
