Elucidating earthquakes and volcanic activity to aid disaster mitigation
JAMSTEC aims to contribute to disaster reduction measures for a forthcoming megathrust earthquake or volcanic eruption.Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics (IMG), play a leading role in the earthquake and volcano research in JAMSTEC.We will conduct large-scale geophysical-geological surveys in the seismogenic zone, such as Nankai Trough and Japan Trench, and marine volcanoes, such as Kikai Caldera, using research vessels and various state-of-the-art marine exploration technologies. Numerical simulation is a key to maximize the utilization of the observation data.We strive to contribute to disaster mitigation by sharing our scientific knowledge with society.
