[MS7-3C-3] Determination of Normal Reference Values of Mean Flow Velocity and Pulsatility Index Using Transcranial Doppler Sonography Among Healthy Children

Nancy Buena Tenorio (Child Neuroscience Center, Philippine Children’s Medical Center, Philippines)

[OBJECTIVE] This study aims to determine the cerebral blood flow velocity and pulsatility index of the cerebral vessels among healthy Filipino children age 1 month to less than 19 years old in selected barangays in Quezon City.
[METHODOLOGY] Using the TCD sonography, the following vessels ACA, MCA, PCA, BA, VA, and OA were insonated to determine the MFV and PI.
[RESULTS] A total of 225 healthy subjects were divided into 5 groups. The MFV increases during the first 6 years of life while ACA peaks earlier at 1 month old to 3 years old. The MFV is highest in the anterior than the posterior circulation consistent with studies done in North America and Europe. No significant difference between the two hemispheres was seen in our study. MFV is relatively lower compared with other studies while the the PI are comparable with other studies.
[CONCLUSION] We have constructed clinically useful reference standard of MFV and PI of the cerebral vessels in children 1 month old to less than 19 years old.
[RECOMMENDATIONS] Results can be used as standard values for TCD in Filipino children. Further studies on determination of PI and MFV reference values during the neonatal period may also be undertaken.
