[P1-91] The correlation between febrile seizure plus and unprovoked seizure in children on Jeju Island, South Korea

Seunghyo KIM (Department of Pediatrics, Jeju National University Hospital, South Korea)

We reviewed retrospectively patients whose febrile seizure (FS) occurred after 5 years of age, visiting to the Jeju National University Hospital between January 2009 and December 2014. Among 789 patients with FS, 104 patients developed FS after 5 years of age. Excluding 20 patients with meningitis or previous afebrile seizure, 84 patients were enrolled in the final study. In 30 patients, FS developed for the first time after 5 years old and 54 patients showed previous FS before 5 years old. 38 patients were diagnosed with complex FS. Subsequent nonfebrile seizures were observed in 29 patients. The abnormal findings of EEG were detected in 58.9% patients. We classified 84 patients into two groups based on the onset of first FS : group A, before 5 years old; group B, after 5 years old. Two variables were more statistically prevalent in the group A : family history of FS and complex FS. In addition, we analyzed two groups on the basis of the presence of unprovoked seizure. The group showing subsequent unprovoked seizure showed statistically meaningful four variables in univariate analysis : complex FS, neurodevelopmental delay, 1st FS onset < 39℃, EEG abnormalities.
Of patients with FS plus, patients whose first FS developed before 5 years of age showed more frequent family history of FS and complex FS compared with patients whose first FS started after 5 years old. Furthermore, subsequent unprovoked seizure developed more frequently in children with complex FS, neurodevelopmental delay, 1st FS onset < 39℃ and EEG abnormalities.
