[P2-59] The Current Status and issues of epilepsy in our Residential hospitals for persons with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID)

Shiho Honzawa (Tokyo Metropolitan Tobu Medical Center for Persons with Developmental / Multiple Disabilities(TRC), Japan)

Background
Our center has 120 beds and the number of beds for long term hospitalization for SMID is 90. Prevalence of epilepsy in SMID has often been reported to be 60-70% depends pf their clinical severity.

Aim
To find out the clinical features of epilepsy among patients with SMID in our facility, and to clarify the usages and effectiveness of new antiepileptic drugs among our patients.

Methods
Subjects are 90 patients with SMID who have been hospitalized for long term basis in our center. 57% of the patients are on the tube feeding and 36% of them on Mechanical Ventilation. We studied their clinical records retrospectively and the efficacy of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) especially of new anticonvulsants were evaluated.

Results
Life long history of epilepsy was 81% in our patients. The onset of epilepsy was the earliest in their infancy, in the preschool age and then in the newborn period. The most common type of epilepsy was generalized tonic seizure followed by generalized tonic-clonic seizure.34% percent of the patients were administered a new drugs in combination with the traditional drugs. Levetiracetam (LEV) is the most often used drug, and Lamotorigin (LTG) followed. After introduction of LEV or LTG, the seizure free rate was increased from 6.7% to 15.6%.

Conclusion
The prevalence of epilepsy in our center was higher than those previously reported. The reason should be the clinical severity in our patients. Introduction of new antiepileptic drugs along with the traditional medication was effectively.
