[P3-176] A Clinical Survey of Hospitalized Children Requiring Psychological Intervention at the Department of Pediatrics, Fukuoka University, 2014-2016.
[Introduction]
There are some cases in which hospitalized children require psychological intervention: for example, when physical symptoms result from psychological factors or when organic diseases are exacerbated by psychological factors.
[Patients and Methods]
Our study surveys the medical reports of children who needed specialized psychological intervention during hospitalization at Fukuoka University Hospital from April 2014 to March 2016. Cases were excluded if they were recognized as child abuse or had involved developmental screening or NICU. There were 38 children (1 to 15 years old) in the study. Twenty-two (58%) were girls and 16 (42%) boys. Twelve (31%) were infants, 15 (39%) elementary students, and 11 (30%) middle school students.
[Results]
The final diagnoses included 19 mental and neurological disorders (50%), 7 hematological diseases and cancers (18%) , 3 endocrinal and metabolic diseases (8%), 3 kidney and urinary tract diseases (8%), and 6 other disorders (16%). The reasons for psychological intervention were suspicion of mental problems (60%), chronic diseases (18%), and support for children's parents (16%). Prior to hospitalization, 6 (16%) of the children had not been considered to have psychological problems.
[Conclusion]
Some children's need for psychological intervention may be evident only after hospitalization.
