[P3-180] The Prevalence Of Primary Headache In High School Students And Evaluation Of Severity And Associated Risk Factors; Population Base Study

Vitchayaporn Emarach Saengow (Department of Pediatrics, Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, Thailand)

[Backgrounds] headache, a common health issue in children that takes the parents’ concern and has effect on children’s school performance. As there are only few studies regarding the prevalence of primary headache in children in Thailand, a complete survey on this health issue is essential.
[Methods] in this cross-sectional study, students (12-18 years) from 4 high schools in Nakhon Ratchasima province were randomly selected and undergone a primary headache screening via questionnaires. Those compatible with primary headache symptoms were sent to further examination by pediatric neurologist using the criteria of the international classification of headache disorders; later on the characteristic of headaches and the associated factors were evaluated.
[Results] 2,774 students were screened and 248 students (prevalence 8.9%, mean age 14.3 + 1.75 years, girl 63.31%) were classified for having primary headache (55 and 29 students were diagnosed with migraine and tension headache respectively while the remaining were considered having unspecified headaches). In migraine cases female considered predominate and 74.54% of migraine was classified as without aura. The common characteristic of migraine was moderate to severe throbbing pain, unilateral at temporal region. Common characteristic of tension headache was bilateral, moderate tense pain. From multivariate analysis, stress was the associated factor for both migraine and tension headaches.
[Conclusion] migraine and tension headache should be highly considered in children with headache complaint; stress as a risk factor should also be counted. To avoid the effects of headache on children’s lives and education, reducing stress and life style modification is compulsory.
