[P3-198] A 5 year old with a Dysembryoplastic Neuroepithelial Tumor, Right Temporal Lobe

Katrina Irene T. MANIBOG (Child Neurosciences Division, Philippine Children’s Medical Center, Quezon City, Philippines)

A 5 year old male presented with a 5 month history of visual hallucinations of children watching him and partial seizures. Although controlled with Valproic Acid and Levitiracetam, further work-up revealed a non-enhancing mass located on the right temporal lobe on Cranial Magnetic Resonance Imaging with contrast. Gross total excision of the tumor was done and histopathological analysis identified the mass as Dysembryoplastic Neuroepithelial Tumor.
Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNET) are rare benign cortical tumors with a predilection on the temporal areas of the brain. Its incidence is approximated at 1% of all brain tumor, but the exact incidence internationally and locally is not known. Patients would present with drug-resistant epilepsies and at epilepsy centers, further testing and neuroimaging would reveal its presence. Thus, it is only through a high index of suspicion and neuroimaging that would often clinch the diagnosis. Surgical intervention is a mainstay treatment and prognosis is often good if there is complete resection of the tumor.
