In 2020, the world saw the panic caused by COVID-19 pandemic. Many cities were locked down, and voices to force social-distance echoed all over. The pandemic accelerated the digital transformation. Telework has been normalized and exodus from city center has been observed.
Cities may be in the middle of searching for new values.
Beside COVID-19, cities are facing multiples of crises. Climate change, natural disasters including typhoon, earthquakes, a flood, poverty, food shortage, invasion and so on. However, it is not first time that we have been facing these crises. We have been able to overcome these crises by restructuring social system, redesigning urban space, and strengthening the social resiliency.
In this special section, we would like to share the surging issues generated by these current crises, and the methodology to overcome these issues. We would like to discuss how the city in coming generations should be formed.
