The 27th International Display Workshops (IDW ’20) will be held virtually from December 9th (Wednesday) to 11th (Friday) of this year. Over the three days of the IDW ’20 virtual conference, we will provide attractive sessions and valuable virtual spaces to reinforce our connections with the many presenters and attendees.
IDW '20 consists of 13 Workshops (WSs) categorized by fundamental display technologies, and a topical session (TS) focused on new technology. Topics pertaining to the TS and several WSs will be covered in the Special Topics of Interest (STI) that will be collaboratively designed by the TS and respective WSs.

IDW ’20 will feature 290 presentations, including three keynote addresses, one special talk, 115 invited presentations, 101 oral presentations, and 70 poster presentations (including 62 late-news presentations). Following the plenary session of keynote addresses on Wednesday morning, presentations will begin and continue in 6 parallel oral sessions through Friday. Poster sessions, author interviews will enable participants to discuss topics in detail. In parallel with the technical sessions, an online exhibition of display technologies by private companies will be presented to introduce the latest achievements in display and display-related technologies. IDW ’20 should be of interest to not only researchers and engineers, but also managers of companies and institutions in the display community.
Special Topics of Interest on AR/VR and Hyper Reality (AR&VR)
Augmented reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications and UI/UX employing high performance display devices such as sensors, cameras, and software technologies have shown significant progress in the recent years.
This year we have organized Special Topics composed of related papers from multiple sessions ranging from display devices to optics for HMD, algorithm, ergonomics, standardization, and materials for AR/VR applications. The IDW ’20 is a venue to access versatile state-of-the-art research in AR and VR.
Special Topics of Interest on Automotive Displays (AUTO)
Special Topics of Interest on Automotive Displays (AUTO), which began in 2016, will present wide-ranging presentations on automotive displays.
This year, AUTO sessions are scheduled to be held in four WSs (INP, PRJ, DES, and VHF) on December 10 (Thursday). In the INP WS, new types of touch sensors such as fingerprint detection and others will be discussed. In the PRJ WS, interesting topics will be presented such as the improved LED system that can be applied to automotive headlights, the dynamic holographic products for automotive head-up displays, the integrated system of the Lidar and headlight, and facial image recognition systems. In other WSs, new technologies will be presented such as the automotive camera monitor system, display screen burn-in, 3D head-up displays, and technology related to autonomous driving. AUTO sessions are arranged to aid the understanding of a wide range of automotive display technologies and will surely attract those who are concerned with automotive applications.

Special Topics of Interest on Micro/Mini LEDs (mLED)
At IDW’19 (last year), large-, small- and micro-size displays with micro-LED pixels were reported on. This year, in IDW ’20, further technology requirements for their production will be discussed. For example, mass-transfer techniques for the fabrication of LED arrays. In particular, TFTs for the drive of LED arrays will be discussed in this session.
Reduction of optical cross talk in LED arrays using Si-trench will also be discussed.
Special Topics of Interest on Quantum Dot Technologies (QDT)
This topic will cover all aspects of the science and technologies of quantum dots (QD) and quantum rods (QR), ranging from materials research, device structure and properties, device applications for lighting and display, manufacturing and high color gamut displays using QD. This topic will specialize in QD technologies (QDT) in order to provide a venue for the vitalization of debates in each field. At IDW '20, sessions will be established as STI at each Work Shop of PH, MEET, and OLED.
The highlights for IDW ’20 will be oral presentations and poster sessions regarding the development of recent progress in wide color gamut phosphor with CsPbX3 QDs incorporating PMMA composite microspheres
 (PH-WS), display, light source and biomedical applications using high quantum-efficiency cd-free quantum-dot nanocrystal materials such as colloidal perovskites, as well as all-inorganic QLEDs having a high luminescence intensity and superior thermal stability and conductivity (MEET-WS), Cd-free blue QDs based LEDs with high efficiency and high color purity emission spectra, and efficient perovskite based LEDs with high durability (OLED-WS).
Topical Session on Artificial Intelligence and Smart Society (AIS)
Recently, artificial intelligence has become a common technology, and it will be a key concept of the smart society in the future, known as Industry 4.0 and
Society 5.0, where the cloud and edge are excellently connected. In this scope, the relationship between information displays, artificial intelligence, and smart society will be discussed. This year, four invited speakers are invited, and there will be presentations that propose how to interact with information displays in a smart society where artificial intelligence is essential: visual recognition using deep neural networks, transparent display interactive system with AI recognition, smart display via deep learning, and material translation based on neural technology. In addition, joint oral sessions with VHF, DES, AMD, PRJ, and INP and poster sessions are also planned. This indicates that this topical session has a wide relationship with various technologies.
Workshop on LC Science and Technologies (LCT)
The LC Science and Technologies (LCT) workshop covers the latest LC-based technologies, from new and improved display modes and materials, flexible LCDs, and high reliability LCDs for automobiles, to emerging applications such as LC lenses, phase modulators, LIDARs, and smart windows. In addition to the technical presentations, we have organized an invited session titled “What’s next for LCDs?” to discuss their future prospects. We will have Prof. Shin-Tson Wu from the University of Central Florida (USA) give an extended lecture comparing the current display technologies. Also, BOE Technology Group (China) and Sharp Corporation (Japan) will present their latest research on high-performance LCDs. This year’s workshop will be an excellent opportunity for participants to learn about the latest LC-related developments as well as what to expect next.
Workshop on Active Matrix Displays (AMD)
The AMD workshop covers active matrix driven LCDs, micro-LEDs, OLEDs, sensors, and other devices. Recent paper presentations tend to focus on oxide TFT, which is highly expected to play a role in applications for high resolution LCDs and OLEDs, and micro-LEDs. The workshop highlights the innovative displays and devices covering a wide area from materials, physics, devices, and manufacturing processes to applications. We have scheduled five sessions for new TFT applications including displays and sensors, micro-LEDs, emerging TFTs, and oxide TFTs. The WS will especially focus on the latest technology of micro-LED displays.
Workshop on FPD Manufacturing, Materials and Components (FMC)
The FPD Manufacturing, Materials and Components (FMC) workshop covers recent developments and achievements in the field of flat panel display technologies, including display optics, materials, components, display panel manufacturing and measurements technologies. In the FMC sessions, papers related to high-precision manufacturing process (FMC1), aerial display and optical components for AR/VR (FMC3, PRJ3/FMC2), optical design, metrology for curved-display and aerial-display standardizations, and micro-LED (FMC4) are presented. In IDW’20, optics for display are highlighted. A new optical design method for aerial display, which utilizes 3D computer graphics software, is introduced in an invited talk. In the FMC sessions state-of-the-art aerial displays will be presented as well as the world-first aquatic display.
Workshop on Inorganic Emissive Display and Phosphors (PH)
This workshop presents the latest achievements in devices and phosphors for emissive displays, lighting, and imaging. Invited talks will present the development of novel nitride phosphors using Li ion doping. Recent progress of phosphors and color converters for LASER lighting, CsPbBr3 perovskite QD incorporating poly methyl methacrylate composite microspheres, and spectroscopy experiments for phosphorescence materials will be covered.
Workshop on OLED Displays and Related Technologies (OLED)
The OLED workshop covers all aspects of the science and technologies of OLED, QLED and other organic devices, ranging from material science, basic device physics for OLED device and display technologies, and other applications. The oral and poster sessions will cover OLED display and device technologies, analysis technologies, materials technologies and advanced technologies concerning OLED/QLED devices and materials. Recent progress such as automotive applications, micro-OLED display, perovskite QD technologies, and so on will be reported on. We will also focus in particular on quantum dot technologies (QDT) as a special topic of interest (STI).
Workshop on 3D/Hyper-Realistic Displays and Systems (3D)
The 3D/hyper-realistic displays and systems workshop consists of many papers on 3D systems and devices for holography, light field display, integral photography, autostereoscopic display, aerial display, and emerging applications for AR/VR. We have six invited talks related to displaying light fields from various camera systems, aerial display and its applications, AR system based on 3D gaze sensing, integral photography and depth perception, hologram acquisition systems for holographic media services, and interactive holographic display systems.
Workshop on Applied Vision and Human Factors (VHF)
The VHF workshop covers all ergonomic factors in human interfaces, such as visual aspects, environmental-related aspects, and measurements. We will hold seven oral sessions and one poster session, including special topic sessions on automotive applications and virtual reality, in addition to image quality and physiological factors. We will also hold two joint sessions on AIS (Topical Session on Artificial Intelligence and Smart Society) related to deep learning and image quality. Eight invited talks will be given in the oral sessions, concerning human factors in 3D images and VR, color and brightness in AR, ipRGC in brightness perception, visual perception with dynamic projection mapping, individual preference via user interaction, and 3D HUD optical-property measurements.
Workshop on Projection and Large-Area Displays and Their Components (PRJ)
The PRJ workshop covers eyewear/eyepiece optics, automotive systems, solid-state light sources, electronic holograms, aerial displays, projection algorithms, 3D-measurement optics including light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and all the projection related technologies.
This year’s session will focus on human sensing enabling a “new normal” after the COVID-19 era, space (satellite imagery), and the latest display technologies in smart cities, AR/VR and its platforms, dynamic projection mapping and its algorithms, automotive displays, laser phosphors, and micro optics for AR. These 34 papers will be orally presented (partly presented in posters) in seven sessions.
Workshop on Electronic Paper (EP)
The Electronic Paper workshop will cover electrophoretic, electrochromic, and electrowetting technologies. In the sessions, emerging topics in electronic paper including color technology, battery-free charging for driving, materials, printing technology, new applications for the medical field, mass production technology for smart windows, and readability studies will be discussed. These aggressive challenges will be presented in the following four sessions: 1) Electrochromic Technologies from Advanced Materials to Applications, 2) Advanced ePaper Technologies, 3) Advanced Electrophoretic Technologies, and 4) Challenges for ePaper.
Workshop on MEMS and Emerging Technologies for Future Displays and Devices (MEET)
The MEET workshop is unique in covering all aspects of MEMS, microLEDs, quantum dot, nanotechnologies and emerging technologies concerning future displays, imaging devices, and emerging electron devices. The MEET workshop has established sessions on microLEDs and quantum dot/quantum dot light-emitting diodes for the first time in the world in academic society, and seeks to broaden the horizon of display and imaging technologies into cutting-edge technologies. Research areas such as materials, basic physics, and fabrication processes are included. Among all the MEMS, nanotechnologies and display conferences in the world, this is the only opportunity for MEMS, nanotechnologies and cutting-edge technology researchers to gather and discuss such devices. Authorities from top research institutions around the world in this field have been invited. Invited speakers will come from CEA-LETI, University of Michigan, University of Southern Florida, Seoul National University, Kyung Hee University, Hongik University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Fuzhou University, Southern University of Science and Technology, National Chiao Tung University, Intel Corp., X-display, and Yole Développement. Together with contributed papers with high-quality content, this workshop is aimed at participants who wish to open up new fields in displays, imaging devices, biomedical applications and emerging devices such as carbon nanotube electron beam sources and ultraviolet light sources by using MEMS micro/nano fabrication technology. Moreover, please, look forward to the Micro/Mini LEDs session for wide color-gamut micro LEDs as next generation displays, as well as quantum dot technologies sessions on highly efficient cd-free quantum-dot nanocrystal perovskites, and so on.
Workshop on Display Electronic Systems (DES)
The DES workshop (Display Electronic Systems) introduces next generation systems, advanced applications, and pursues high display performance based on advances in circuit technology and software processing technology. This year, DES-WS will organize three oral sessions as well as one poster session. We will feature display driving technology, new expression techniques such as AR, and image application technologies such as AUTO-related technology, and image processing technology incorporating machine learning as at previous IDWs. In addition, we will host a session on Media Art related technologies as a new challenge.
Workshop on Flexible Electronics (FLX)
The FLX workshop focuses on advanced technologies for flexible electronics including flexible displays, wearable devices, stretchable devices, and IoT-related devices, which are composed of a wide range of fields from material science to practical applications. The sessions cover all aspects of the most topical flexible devices and material technologies including flexible displays, foldable displays and wearable sensors.
Workshop on Touch Panels and Input Technologies (INP)
The INP workshop will mainly cover everything from basics to applications regarding touch panel technology, which has become an indispensable user interface for tablets and mobile displays and further applied to in-vehicle displays. Especially with the keyword of in-cell type, participants will be interested in the IGZO X-ray sensor, capacitor type fingerprint and touch sensors, and near-infrared type fingerprint sensors this year. And as a next-generation transparent electrode, we cannot overlook the fabrication of mesh electrodes by laser lithography. In addition, INP has been pursuing the elemental technology of human interface for 10 years while the usefulness of virtual space-time sharing is being demonstrated under the corona virus. Augmented reality and sensory feedback technology are attracting attention as next-generation interfaces, and INP provides an important forum for discussions on technological trends and future directions. This year, there are many presentations that cannot be overlooked, such as an ultrasonic trapping display that can reproduce visual, auditory, and tactile sensations at the same time, a ball-shaped haptic display that reproduces physical experience, and an inverse problem in tactile display.
Kobayashi-Uchiike-Mikoshiba Prize
The Kobayashi-Uchiike-Mikoshiba Prize shall be conferred by the International Display Workshops General Incorporated Association Board of Directors upon a person who has both an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IDW fields of interest and made an outstanding contribution to the IDW. The accomplishments that are being honored shall have led to important contributions in the 13 advancement or application of engineering, science and technology, resulting in the realization of significant value to society.
IDW Best Paper Award and IDW Outstanding Poster Paper Award
IDW will present “IDW Best Paper Award” and “IDW Outstanding Poster Paper Award”. The award committee of IDW will select the most outstanding papers from those presented at IDW ’20. The award winners will be announced on the IDW website and given a plaque after
the conference.
Special Talk
December 11 from 9:20 –10:00
Professor Yoichi Ochiai of the University of Tsukuba will be presenting a special talk at IDW ’20 entitled, “xDiversity Platform: Audio-Visual-Tactile Communication Technologies with AI-tools Towards an Inclusive Society.” He aims to explore AI-assisted human-machine integration techniques for overcoming impairments and disabilities.

Keynote Exhibition
Dr. Koji Mitani, director of the Science and Technology Research Laboratories (STRL) at NHK (Japan’s national broadcaster), will give a keynote address on various visions and the development and concept of future broadcasting technology, and the address will be introduced on the online keynote exhibition page.
