[2E21] China and India's pathway to net-zero

○Mika Takehara1 (1. Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation )

China and India are the world's largest consumers of coal and oil. In September 2020, Chinese President Xi Jinping declared that China aims to "peak its emissions before 2030 and become carbon neutrality by 2060".China is reducing coal and shifting to renewable energy. India is under pressure to set a net-zero target but is resisting it, as economic development and population growth will lead to higher energy consumption. It is expected to take a moderate approach to climate change while making efforts to transition to renewable energy.
