希土類金属錯体触媒を使用することでエチレン/スチレン/ブタジエン３元共重合体（ESB）が得られる。 ESBは汎用樹脂であるポリエチレンに汎用ゴムであるポリブタジエンが分子内に導入された構造となっているため、樹脂の強靭さとゴムの柔軟さを両立した高強度な熱可塑性エラストマーとなる。また、一次構造や高次構造を精密に制御することにより、高い耐突き刺し性や自己修復性といった高機能性を示すとともに、ポリマーの分解性を向上させることも可能となった。
