The bottom-up growth process of graphene nanoribbons with functionalized edges is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The anthracene dimer precursor with thiophene ring at the edges are taken as an example. It was revealed that the rigid backbone of anthradithiophene make hydrogen atoms away from the Au substrate, which make the desorption barrier for hydrogen higher than that of hydrogens in conventional DBBA precursors. Instead of catalytic detachment of hydrogen to substrate, hydrogen atoms hop to adjacent carbon atoms at the edges, and cleave thiophene rings. These results will provide us with design policy of precursors for bottom-up growth of GNRs with functional edges.
