[VIII29-19] Effects of maternal nutrition on fetal development in Wagyu cows

[Introduction] the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of maternal nutrition throughout gestation on muscle, bone, and fat development of Wagyu (Japanese Black) fetuses. [Materials and Method] Japanese Black cows (n=8) were used. The low-nutrition treatment group (group LN: n=5) and high-nutrition treatment group (group HN: n=3) were fed diets that met 60% and 120%, respectively of the nutritional requirements for breeding cattle of Japanese Black. The fetuses were dissected at 8.5 months of fetal age. The weights of the body, muscles, six adipose depots, and 12 parts of bones of fetuses were measured. [Results and Discussion] Body, total muscle, and adipose weights of fetuses were significantly greater in group HN. The semitendinosus, biceps femoris and longissimus muscles weights were significantly greater in group NH. The subcutaneous, thoracic cavity, perirenal and peritoneal fat weights were significantly greater in group NH. The vertebrae lumbales and vertebrae sacrales weights were also significantly greater in group HN. In summary, maternal nutrition of gestation affected fetal skeletal muscle growth and body composition.
