[Objective] This study investigated the effects of housefly larval (HL) diets on the blood properties and intestinal histology of broilers. [Methods] Fifty-four broilers (Chunky males, 7-day-old) were divided into three groups that fed with the diets containing either 3% fish meal (FM) (C group), 1.5% FM and 1.5% HL (L group), or 3% HL (H group) until 49 days old. Feed intake and body weight were measured weekly, while the plasma and small intestine were collected at the end of the test. [Results] There was no significant difference in feed conversion ratio among the groups. Total cholesterol and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase concentrations in the plasma were significantly higher in the L and H groups compared to the C group. TNF-α concentrations were significantly lower in the H group than in the others. In addition, the villus height/crypt depth (VH/CD) ratio of the duodenum was significantly higher in the H group than in the other groups, and the VH/CD ratio of the jejunum and ileum was significantly higher in the L and H groups than in the C group. These results suggest that HL may improve broilers’ nutrient absorption capacity when formulated in feed instead of FM.
