Vibrational sum-frequency generation (V-SFG) spectroscopy is an optical measurement method for examining molecular structures at interfaces. However, the current V-SFG measurements have a limited detection range due to the bandwidth of the incident IR pulse. To overcome this limitation, we have developed a novel V-SFG system that utilizes a broadband IR pulse generated by a two-color laser-induced air plasma filamentation. Our system has achieved ultra-broadband SFG detection of a polymer film on a GaAs(100) substrate between 550-3000 cm-1. This measurement provides comprehensive information about the molecules, such as intra- and inter-molecular vibrations and frustrated translations or rotations all at once. Because our method is based on ultrashort IR and visible pulses, the extension to time-resolved spectroscopy is also promising, which will pave a new pathway for tracking transient dynamics of chemical reactions at the surfaces.
