幌延地圏環境研究所ではUBE三菱セメント株式会社が鉱業権を有する道北地方の天北小石露天坑において、バイオメタン鉱床の創成に向けた現場試験を実施している。2020年度は海洋深層水と過酸化水素水、2021年度はギ酸溶液（ギ酸ナトリウム）および二酸化炭素溶液（炭酸水素ナトリウム）の褐炭層への注入試験を実施した。各注入試験後に採水された試料水のメタン・二酸化炭素の炭素同位体比は、褐炭層内における迅速なバイオメタンの生成を示唆した。また、炭素の形態変化に関するモデルを構築し数値シミュレーションを実施した結果、メタン生成速度は10-5～10-4 mol L-1 day-1と評価された。
