The emergence of smart cities illuminates positive expectations such as solving urban problems through Information and Communications Technology (ICT), a new model of economic growth, and quality of life. Behind the spotlight of the smart city, some people cannot enjoy the city of smart infrastructures due to the knowledge gap such as the digital divide. It is believed that living labs suggest a new platform for smart cities that can prevent failures of urban development. The living lab provides a better understanding of how citizens will adapt to life in a smart city, enabling the development of smart cities that are more likely to succeed by a participatory approach. The methodology of the living lab adopts collective intelligence to solve real-world problems in a real-life setting. Therefore, the competencies of participants may affect the success of a living lab. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research on the improvement of participants’ knowledge through the living lab. This study aims to examine how participation in the urban living lab influences the knowledge level of solar power technologies and to identify the influencing factors. Our empirical study presents that the knowledge level of solar power technology improved through participation in the living lab. In addition, the results describe that the types of activity programs in the living lab were not associated with knowledge acquisition.
