Keywords:Heavy Snowfall Areas, Historic Central Districts, Back Lots, Ownership, Use

In the historic central commercial district of Kuroishi City, located in a region with heavy snowfall, the development of public space by utilizing the back lots of townhouses, called "Kaguji," has been a strategy for urban reorganization since the 1980s. There have been no studies on "Kaguji" and it has not been clarified what kind of characteristics it has. This study, therefore, analyzes cadasters and cadastral maps and conducts interviews to clarify the mechanisms of ownership and use of "Kaguji". As a result, "Kaguji" were once flexibly bought and sold between neighboring houses and were also used jointly by neighboring houses. This flexibility of ownership and use of "Kaguji" among trusted residences provided redundancy in commerce and life in the historic central commercial district.
