Health has become an important issue for urban residents due to the growing interest in work life balance and an increase in life expectancy. In response to the significance of health issues, the “walkable” city paradigm is emerging in the urban context. A walkable environment can promote physical activity (e.g., walking, exercise, etc.) and active transit. Furthermore, regular walking behavior can enhance individual physical health as well as mental health. In this vein, many studies have analyzed the relationship between individual health and neighborhood environments. Despite numerous studies highlighting the association between built environments and individual health status, we still have a limited understanding of which built environmental characteristics directly or indirectly influence individual health through the mediating factor of physical activity. Based on the online survey of 9 98 respondents in Seoul, this study utilized a generalized structural equation model (GSEM) to clarify the effects of various walkable environments on individual health status through the mediators of walking behavior. In addition, along with neighborhood scale walkable environments, this study estimated street level walkable built environment characteristics using Google Street View (GSV) panorama images and deep learning techniques. The results showed that both neighborhood scale and street level walkable features positively affected individual health status through the mediating role of walking behavior. Particularly, the street level walkable environments indirectly affect health status through leisure walking behaviors. Our findings may help planning practitioners and policymakers develop a neighborhood environment which encourages physical activity and improves health.
