Lactobacillus is known to be one of the probiotics and found in the genital tract of cows. However, effect of L. spp.in postpartum bovine uterus remains unknown. Therefore, the present study aimed to clarify the effect of L. spp.on endometrial PMN% in postpartum (pp) dairy cows and to reveal the relationship between L.spp.with pathogenic bacteria. Endometrial samples were collected from 41 cows at week 4 (w4) and w8 pp. Endometrial PMN% was calculated, and L. spp., Trueperella pyogenesand Escherichia coliwere isolated by bacterial culture. The animals were classified into endometritis (E+) and non-endometritis (E-) groups according to PMN% at w4 pp. The cows were also divided into L. spp.-positive group (L+) and L. spp.-negative group (L-) at w4 pp. The results showed that the average PMN% of the E+L+ group (1.1 ± 1.2%) was lower (P < 0.05) than the E+L-group (23.6 ± 26.4%). At w4 or w8 pp., all of the cows that had at least 1000 colonies/ml of T. pyogenesor E. coli(n = 7) had less than 10 colonies/ml of L. spp. In conclusion, Lactobacillus spp.may have a positive effect in improving uterine environment in pp dairy cows.
