Ag-deposited Ni(110) surfaces were studied by UHV-STM. Ag did not alloy with Ni atoms in the substrate but formed a stripe overlayer along the [001] direction with a 10× periodicity in the close-packed [11-0] direction. In the magnified image we could identify three regions coexist. In the first region, Ag atoms are considered to grow epitaxially in the [11-0] direction to form bright bands in the [001] direction and they have wavy structures with a 3× periodicity. The second region is noisy, it is likely that Ag atoms in the [11-0] row do not match the periodicity of the substrate and fluctuate in the [11-0] row. A trench structure with a depression of about 120 pm and is considered to be a region where no Ag overlayer exist. LEED observation showed one-tenth of the satellites spots near integer-order spots of the Ni(110) 1×1 structure in the [11-0] direction, suggesting that epitaxially grown Ag atoms have a superstructure along the [11-0] row.
