[2P29] An effect of a wind to the sniffing leak test

*Kenta Arai1 (1. National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ), National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST))

A portable type sniffer leak detector (LD) has been used for searching leaks of refrigerant gases from air-coordinators or hydrogen from fuel cell vehicles. Although a wind seems to be a factor to perturb the reliable leak measurement (test), its effect has not been well studied due to the difficulty in making a steady flow wind. In this study, the wind effect for the sniffer leak test has been investigated using a simple wind tunnel with a wind speed of 0.4 m/s to 4.0 m/s. As a result, the LD output was strongly perturbed by the wind at the leak measuring place even if the wind power was in “Light air (<1.5 m/s)” of the Beaufort scale (wind power). For tested distance from the standard leak, considered as a real leak, to the sniffer probe, the LD output was once increased from 0 m/s to 0.5 m/s, then gradually decreased to almost zero at 4.0 m/s for L = 0 mm.
