[S58] Elucidation of the mechanisms of RNA diseases and manipulation of RNA

Sun. Mar 31, 2024 9:45 AM - 11:45 AM [Room 502] Conference Center 502 (5F)

Organizer: Miki Imanishi (ICR, Kyoto Univ.), Hitomi Tsuiji (Sch. Pharm., Aichi Gakuin Univ.)

In recent years, it has become clear that abnormal repeat sequences in RNA cause neurodegenerative diseases and that dysregulation of RNA chemical modification and processing are associated with various diseases, including cancer. Therefore, RNA has been positioned as one of the most important drug targets. However, there are still no effective treatments for neurodegenerative diseases that are fundamentally caused by abnormal elongation of RNA repeat sequences, and there is an urgent need in pharmaceutical research for both a fully understanding of the mechanisms of RNA diseases and the development of technologies to manipulate RNA. In this symposium, researchers with different backgrounds will come together to introduce approaches from various perspectives regarding the analysis of pathogenic mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases caused by abnormal repeat RNA sequences and the development of therapeutic agents. In addition, we will also introduce the latest findings on nucleic acid structure- and sequence-specific RNA manipulation methods, such as RNA modification control and RNA editing control using protein chemistry and nucleic acid chemistry approaches. We would like to provide a place to think about the pathogenesis and control of RNA diseases.
