[086] Does Urban Grow from the Inside Out? Debate on the Finite Plain

Fu Jhih TANG, Yen Jong CHEN

Keywords: urban growth, location choice, rent equilibrium, logit model

Due to the continuous outward expansion of the built-environment boundaries, as well as residential development of lower land prices at the junction of urban and rural area, urban growth is intuitively seen as occurring above urban boundaries, while relevant studies have focused on population migration as an important issue for urban growth. This paper further distinguishes the economic force of residential location choice from the self-reinforcing of urban agglomeration, and considers open space as urban amenity, along with living service to form household’s utility for location choice. In terms of a self-sufficient monocentric city framework that lies on Alonso’s featureless plain, and by means of rent equilibrium and logit model, the derivation demonstrate the binary choice of households’ locations in the city, and the binary condition on centralized growth when households’ consumption preferences remain unchanged.
