πββοΈ Message from the 33rd JASID Annual Conference Executive Committee
We are pleased to announce that this year's JASID (The Japan Society for International Development) Annual Conference will be held at Meiji University (Surugadai campus, Tokyo) on 3 (Sat) and 4 (Sun) December 2022. We currently plan to use a combination of face-to-face and online sessions.
1. Theme
The theme of this year's conference is "The Global Crisis and International Development - Conflict, Inflation and Hunger". The world is now facing a series of new crises, starting with the recent Corona pandemic, followed by global inflation, then the rise in food prices, such as wheat, and hunger in the Horn of Africa.
All of these crises are trans-national challenges that are difficult for any one country to address and can be described as human security crises, in that the lives of each and every human being are threatened.
These crises are also issues that are difficult to address within one academic discipline, such as economics, alone. Therefore, we hope to provide an opportunity to discuss how the interdisciplinary approach of international development studies can tackle these issues.
2. Meeting method
The situation as of June allows us to hold face-to-face meetings, but we cannot guarantee that there will not be another increase in infections in the future. For this reason, we are preparing to hold the event face-to-face and online simultaneously. We found it very difficult to prepare for both in the preparation process. It is difficult to be prepared for all cases in an uncertain future situation. Although there are some difficulties, we hope to manage to make it a good meeting.
We are planning to have undergraduate students help us with organising the conference. The JASID is responsible for taking measures against the infectious disease for the students, even if they are on the staff side. So we would be grateful for your cooperation.
3. Social Gathering at Jimbocho
Although the conference will be held under various restrictions due to the Corona pandemic, Kanda, Jimbocho, and Ochanomizu are beautiful towns near the venue. Jimbocho is probably the only place in the world where the Tale of Genji picture scrolls and other Edo-period books are sold in shops. I hope you will enjoy walking around the town between conferences!
Unfortunately, social gatherings with food and drink on campus are not permitted due to the countermeasures against the Corona pandemic. We would like to hold a social meeting without drinks where we can discuss among members. Then, you can visit famous coffee shops and restaurants in Jimbocho. You can enjoy not only a variety of Western-style curries but also authentic South Indian, Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi curries. There are also lovely Indonesian, Argentina, and Russian restaurants as well.
We hope this conference will be an opportunity to resume face-to-face meetings and for the members of the society to interact with each other. We look forward to meeting you all.
