[S05] Disease Research and Drug Development Pioneered by Female Researchers with a Focus on the Liver

Fri. Mar 29, 2024 9:45 AM - 11:45 AM [Room 311] Conference Center 311+312 (3F)

Organizer: Yukiko Ueyama-Toba (Grad. Sch. Pharm., Osaka Univ.), Kahori Shimizu (Pharma., Osaka Ohtani Univ.)

The liver is a critical organ responsible for a variety of functions, including metabolism, biosynthesis, and detoxification. Liver damage due to various factors leads to liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Common causes of liver failure include hepatitis virus infection, alcohol consumption, genetic mutations, and drug-induced liver injury. In recent years, the incidence of steatotic liver disease has been increasing due to changes in dietary habits. However, the mechanisms of onset and progression of these liver diseases remain unclear, and limited treatment options are available to treat progressive disease. In this symposium, female researchers approaching the field of hepatology from different perspectives will present their work. The symposium will focus on analyses of molecules involved in the pathogenesis of steatotic liver disease and familial hypercholesterolemia, hepatocyte production using new culture techniques, and analyses of the effects of liver secreted proteins on other organs. Based on the above presentations, we would like to discuss disease research and drug development with a focus on the liver.
