[S14] Novel challenges in academic drug discovery to fight cancer disease

Fri. Mar 29, 2024 1:15 PM - 3:15 PM [Room 311] Conference Center 311+312 (3F)

Organizer: Yasuyuki Nagumo (Div. Cancer Pathophysiol., NCCRI.), Kanako Miyano (Dept. Pain Cont. Res., The Jikei Univ. Sch. Med.)

Nowadays, since the number of novel drugs created by pharmaceutical companies decreases, there is a need to activate drug discovery through academic basic research. In this sense, Japanese government has been promoting drug discovery in academia. Since then, candidate compounds in academia have increased significantly, with particularly great results in the cancer field. However, despite the facts that oncology drug discovery is an unmet medical need and a priority area for pharmaceutical companies, out-licensing from academia to companies has been halted or stagnated from the viewpoint of efficacy and other factors. On the other hand, academia has begun to develop modalities for drug species (drug discovery modalities) as peptides, nucleic acids, and antibodies, although small molecule drug still accounts for more than half of the total share of drug discovery seeds. In this symposium, we will introduce new animal models, drug discovery modalities, and drug discovery seeds, with the hope of revitalizing novel academic drug discovery to fight cancer.
