[JS01] Effects of environmental chemicals on biological homeostasis via adduct formation

There are a wide variety of chemical substances on Earth, and humans take them into their bodies intentionally or unintentionally through water, air, food, medicines, supplements, and so on. Thus, humans are continually exposed to many chemicals throughout their lives. The concept of the "exposome" has been proposed to clarify how it affects living organisms; however, it is almost impossible to explore the effects of many chemicals. In contrast, electrophilic metabolites such as benzopyrene and acetaminophen have been reported to form covalent bonds with biomolecules and exert toxicity. In addition, several endogenous electrophilic substances have been identified in vivo and demonstrated to act as signaling molecules by binding to specific substrates. These results suggest that electrophiles are both good and bad for living organisms. In this symposium, we would like to present the latest research results on the changes in intracellular redox signaling systems and epigenetics caused by the formation of adducts with proteins and other substances, on the pathogenesis of diseases caused by these changes, and deepen the discussion.
