[S45] Toxic AGEs (TAGE) in health

Sat. Mar 30, 2024 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM [Room 302] Conference Center 302 (3F)

Organizer: Masayoshi Takeuchi (Med. Res. Inst., Kanazawa Med. Univ.), Yoshiki Koriyama (Grad. School Pharm. Sci., Suzuka Univ. of Med. Sci.)

Recent studies suggest that advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are one of the factors involved in the onset and progression of lifestyle-related diseases (LSRD). Thus, suppressing the effects of AGEs may be effective in treating and preventing the onset and progression of LSRD. However, various AGEs are produced by a number of biological pathways in the body. Specifically, AGEs derived from glyceraldehyde, a triose metabolic intermediate of glucose and fructose, have been shown to be associated with the onset and progression of LSRD by damaging various cells. This discovery has led to the concept of toxic AGEs (TAGE). It has also been shown that elevated blood TAGE levels, which are associated with various types of cellular damage, may be a novel biomarker for prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment response of LSRD. By understanding the levels of blood TAGE, it may be possible to predict the onset and progression of the disease at an early stage. This will further contribute to the prevention of LSRD and the extension of a healthy life expectancy.
This symposium will provide an overview of the "novel target TAGE" in human health.
