Microplastics (MPs) are defined as plastic particles with a diameter less than 5 mm, and they have raised concerns regarding their ecological and biological impacts. MPs have been detected not only in oceans and rivers but also in air. Human exposure to MPs is inevitable, as we intake them through drinking water, foods, and even respiration. Recent findings indicate that MPs have been detected in human lungs, feces, blood, and placenta, indicating their actions to cross physiological barriers in the human body. However, the extents, characteristics, and risk for human health of environmental MPs remain unclear. Furthermore, nanoplastics (NPs), plastic particles with a diameter less than 1 µm, are suggested to be existed in the environment, which makes it more complicated to measure environmental dynamics and evaluate human risk of MPs and NPs. Plastics exhibit a wide array of polymer types and thus diverse physicochemical properties such as size, shape, degradation, and additives. In addition, plastics are aged by heat and sunlight in the environment. In this symposium, we aim to explore the potential risks of MPs and NPs in the environment on human health while addressing the emerging issues in this field.
