[S31] Frontiers of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): From Basic Research to Health Effects and Regulatory Trends in Japan and Overseas

Sat. Mar 30, 2024 9:45 AM - 11:45 AM [Room 311] Conference Center 311+312 (3F)

Organizer: Yukiko Fujii (Daiichi Univ. of Pharm.), Kouji Harada (Kyoto Univ. Grad. Sch. Med.)

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of chemicals that have been called 'forever chemicals' due to their persistence. Typical PFAS are perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which have been used since the mid-20th century in household and industrial products, as foam extinguishing agents for fuel fires and as manufacturing aids for fluoropolymers. Since 2000, companies that manufacture and use PFAS have voluntarily discontinued the production of PFOS and PFOA due to concerns over their persistence and toxicity, but PFOS and PFOA thought to have been used in the past remain in the environment, and in recent years, a series of recommendations on tap water and blood concentrations have been announced in the US and Europe. There are also a number of unregulated PFAS, and more research is needed to contribute to their health risk assessment. In this symposium, six presenters will report on the latest status of PFAS with the keywords 'Status of national and international efforts', 'Human biomonitoring', 'Human exposure', 'Health effects', 'Toxicity mechanisms' and 'Toxicokinetics and species differences'.
