The competitiveness of Japanese pharmaceutical industry keeps declining. The trade deficit of pharmaceutical products is expanding after biopharmaceuticals dominate the top positions in sales. Now pharmaceuticals have become a large deficit industry that is weighing down Japanese trade balance. This is largely due to the fact that Japanese companies have difficulty in keeping up with the proliferation of the modalities due to their scale disadvantages and stable human resources. Moreover, a corporate culture to hate disclosure of technologies is also responsible for the decline in the presence of Japanese companies.
As an initiative to overcome this situation, in April 2021, the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) and eleven (currently twelve) domestic pharmaceutical companies established a Center of Excellence related to physicochemical characterization and formulation technologies (Materials Open Platform for Pharmaceutical Science). We have a policy of actively disclosing the results of our researches not only for harmonization of developmental technologies but also to appeal to the world on our technological capabilities for making us a top runner in those fields. In this symposium, we will first introduce the overall picture of activities of the Center of Excellence, followed by report on representative results created through our corporative researches.
