Two modified bio-sorbents, wheat and hay straw, have been studied to adsorb Cd and Ni from aqueous solution. The materials are obtained as agricultural byproducts and treated with succinic anhydride to introduce carboxylic group on to the raw materials. After succinylation, proton from carboxylic group has been substituted by Na+ in order to favor the adsorption of Cd and Ni in the subsequent experiment. The effect of pulp density, initial concentration of Cd and Ni, different pH, materials from different preparation stages on the adsorption efficiency were investigated. The competition between Cd and Ni in a Cd-Ni binary solution with different molar ratios of Cd and Ni was studied. The degrees of succinylation of two different bio-sorbents were measured by back titration method. The concentration of Cd and Ni remaining in the solution after adsorption was measured by AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy). Maximum adsorption of 99% and 97% from the solution by the bio-sorbents were observed for cadmium and nickel, respectively. In a mixed nickel and cadmium solution, maximum adsorption of 98% and 89% were measured for cadmium and nickel, respectively.
With the increasing initial concentration of Ni in binary solution, the adsorption percentage of Cd decreased. On the other hand, with the competition of Cd in Cd-Ni binary solution, the adsorption of Ni also decreased and the effect of increasing Cd concentration has more impact on decreased Ni adsorption compared with the effect of increasing Ni concentration on Cd adsorption.
