CURRENCY

Major credit cards are accepted at convenience stores, supermarkets, and many other locations. Many stores also accept prepaid cards such as ICOCA and Suica, and QR code payments such as Alipay. There are not many places in Japan that offer foreign currency exchange, and many banks have declined accepting foreign currency at their stores. Therefore, if you wish to exchange foreign currencies into Japanese yen, it is strongly recommended that you do so in advance at the airport. If you have a credit card, you can use ATMs at banks and convenience stores to get cash advances in Japanese yen. Some hotels also have currency exchange machines.

Prepaid SIM cards are available at Haneda, Narita, and Kansai airports and some major electronics retailers in Tokyo and Osaka.
