[1C04] Quality of Education from the Perspective of Non-Cognitive Skills in Primary Education in Côte d'Ivoire

The purpose of this study is to clarify the quality of education, which is diversifying against the background of universalization of education, using the example of primary education in Côte d'Ivoire from the perspective of non-cognitive skills. The quality of education has traditionally been viewed as an important issue in the field of educational development, and diverse discussions have accumulated. In addition, previous studies depicting discrepancies in perceptions of the quality of education have also been active in recent years. On the other hand, there is growing interest in non-cognitive skills, including discussions on how to view the quality of education in terms of both cognitive and non-cognitive skills, and the perception of the quality of education is diversifying even in Africa, where universalization of education is rapidly progressing. Despite these trends, research on the aspects of non-cognitive skills in the field of educational development has been in its infancy for a long time. Moreover, although the quality of education is considered to be related to the mental aspect of children, there have been no attempts to understand the quality of education from the viewpoint of non-cognitive skills. Furthermore, previous studies on the quality of education have to point out the peculiarities of the background of case studies on primary education, the lack of discussion within the educational activities in the classroom, and the regional bias with an inclination toward the English-speaking countries. Therefore, this study was conducted in Côte d'Ivoire for about 6 weeks, through participant observation and semi-structured interviews with teachers and parents in primary education schools. Based on the data from these field surveys, this presentation will discuss the quality of diversified education from the perspective of non-cognitive skills, focusing mainly on self-efficacy.
