Accelerated microbial transformation of coal into biogenic methane (CH4) is arousing interest globally after the reaction of the coal with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), potentially contributing to "microbially enhanced coal bed methane (MECBM)". To evaluate the enhanced bioavailability of the coal, we investigated the effect of H2O2 solution on lignite in column experiments at different concentrations (0.3 and 3% H2O2) and flow rates (10 and 100 ml/day). The results showed that the highest dissolved organic carbon (the maximum 6,330 mg/l) and organic acids (i.e., acetic acid and formic acid, the maximum 612 and 1,810 mg/l, respectively) in the effluent solution of 3% H2O2-low flow rate (10 ml/day) were observed. Cultivation experiments of methanogens associated with lignite using 0.3% H2O2 solution showed the production of methane by methanogens at the concentration of 63.7 and 278 m3 CH4 per ton lignite after 18 and 35 days, respectively. These indicated the enhancement of the in-situ biogenic methane from chemically-solubilized lignite.
