This study presents the results of an investigation of clay particles from clay interlayer between coal splitting seams. Clay sample from Maetan coal mine in Lampang province, Thailand was characterized for compositions and surface properties by using X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Particle size distribution was examined by using particle size analyzer and sieve analyzer machine. Moisture content and loss of ignition were also investigated. The results show that clay sample contained approximate 60% of silicon dioxide (SiO2), 30% of aluminium oxide (Al2O3), 2% of ferric oxide (Fe2O3) and other trace elements. The clay sample was observed to have flaky surfaces with several stack layers on pseudo-hexagonal crystal shape. The particle size indicated varies from approximate 200nm to more than 1 micron. The moisture content was 12.5%. The clay sample possessed loss of ignition at 17.6%.
