The recovery of cobalt and nickel from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is developed in this study by ion exchange method, in order to investigate the variations in trace metal (Co, Ni) partitioning. The adsorption isotherms were described by means of the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms and the ion exchange behavior of valuable metals on the resin, pH, contact time, temperature and resin dosage has been studied. The experimental measurements have been made on column chromatography of Ni(II) and Co(II) from solution using DOWEX M4195 as chelating resin and Amberlite IRC 748 as cation exchanger, and also compared the adsorption capacity with other kinds of ion exchange resin, such as S-930, CR-11 and TP-272, to achieve separation and purification of the target metal. The recovery of cobalt and Nickel from the cathode material could be reused to the supply of lithium batteries’ materials. In this binary composition solution system, showing that this paves an effective method to recovery valuable metals from cathode materials of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).
