There are over 5,000,000 m3 of dredged harbor sediments generated annually in Taiwan. However, some of them are hard to reutilize due to its high contents of fine clay and organics, so that they are usually disposed in landfill. Thus, the reutilization of these so call fine muds has become a serious problem for the harbor authorities. The purpose of this study was to reutilize sediment by using geopolymer technology to produce green cement.
The experimental results showed that using dredged harbor sediment as raw material to form geopolymer green cement was promising. The initial setting time of sediment based geopolymer green cement mortar was 2hr and the final setting time was 2.5hr. The compressive strength of sediment based geopolymer green cement of various blending ratios after 28 days curing reached over 42MPa, respectively. These results indicate that dredged harbor sediment, especially the fine mud, can be reutilized as construction material inside harbor area by using geopolymer green cement technology.
