The surface area and interlayer spacing of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) were successfully enlarged using nanostructure particles synthesized by hydrothermal method. The MoS2 with the nanostructure and widened interlayer spacing (W-DR-N-MoS2) of 32.3 m2·g-1 was then used to remove gas-phase elemental mercury (Hg0) from simulated industrial flue gas at wide range of temperatures (50 to 200 °C). The W-DR-N-MoS2 exhibited far greater Hg0 adsorption capacity than the conventional bulk MoS2 sorbent due to nanosheets with widened interlayer spacing and the abundance of surface sulfur sites, which have a high binding affinity for Hg0. The adsorbed Hg0 could react with the surface sulfur to form a stable mercury compound, HgS, which was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and a temperature-programmed desorption test. At the medium temperature of 150 °C, the adsorption efficiency of W-DR-N-MoS2 was higher than 80% and the adsorption capacity was much greater than 3960 μg/g after 50 hours. With this excellent Hg0 removal performance, it can be concluded that the W-DR-N-MoS2 showed great potential to be applied in industrial conditions for the removal of mercury as well as the recovery of mercury as a resource.
