[3901-12-01] Leaching behavior of Zinc from Varistors with different acid solutions

Leaching behavior of zinc from varistors was investigated in different acid solutions, including sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid. The experiments were carried out at different acid concentration, temperature, agitation speed and reaction time.
For all of the acid solutions, the extent of zinc extraction increased with the initial acid concentration and zinc leaching was typically found to be fast in the initial period up to 10 min. It was found that an agitation speed above 300 rpm was sufficient to eliminate the effect of this variable on the leaching rate. In sulfuric acid, the results of the leaching kinetics experiments show that the zinc leaching process is controlled by ash layer diffusion, and the apparent activation energy for zinc leaching under the conditions of the experiments was calculated to be 20.7 kJ/mol.
