Keywords:Thermal kinetics analysis, Non-isothermal, Limestone, Activation energy

Non-isothermal analytical techniques, such as thermogravimetry (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), have been widely used to study the kinetics and mechanism of solid thermal decomposition reactions. Non-isothermal behaviors of calcium carbonate using Korean limestone powders were investigated. Calcium carbonate decomposes to give CaO and CO2. The process, as measured by TGA, is influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors include chemical purity and defect content of the sample, its surface area, crystallite size, morphology, etc.
In the study, non-isothermal methods were used to investigate kinetics of the thermal decomposition of Korean limestone powders. The whole experiment was carried out in TGA and DSC analyzer with nitrogen atmosphere up to 1100 ℃ and at five different heating rates (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 ℃ min-1).
The apparent activation energy (Eα) is determined using ASTM E 698, Friedman and Flynn–Wall–Ozawa method and advanced isoconversional methods (Model-Free).
The mean value of the activation energy of Korean limestone powders by ASTM E 698 was 183 ~ 246 kJ/mol, Friedman and Flynn–Wall–Ozawa method was 192 ~ 195 kJ/mol and 195 ~ 202 kJ/mol, respectively.
