[PE1-083] Silver recovery from waste solar cells

Keywords:silver recovery, thiourea leaching, thiol ion exchange

Taiwan is the second largest country of solar panels production.
During the manufacture, around 3% of the solar panels would not
meet the standard and therefore to be threw away.
The waste solar panel contains around 1.5 wt% silver, 7.5 wt%
aluminum and 91% silicon. Silver recovery is not only
commercially lucrative but also an environmental necessity. A
hydrometallurgical process was conducted to recover silver. The
whole process included ball milling, leaching, and ion exchange.
Two kinds of leaching agent were chosen, nitric acid and thiourea
(CS(NH2)2). Different parameter was conducted, such as
concentration, temperature, pH, ORP and time. Followed by ion
exchange, Bio Rad AG 50W-X4 and Ambersep GT74 were chosen
to separate the aluminum ion. Different parameters were
conducted to obtain the optimal separation. The use of ionexchange
resin with thiol group in its chain offers a potential
solution due to its high selectivity for silver. This work
successfully recovers silver (>99%) from waste solar panels.
